If you're smart, have a solid GPA and SAT score, you'll get in. Don't be lazy or UMCP will reject you. I've also know people who wrote fluff essays to get in, but they still had a solid extra curricular and academic record. As for me, I got in because of academics.

Make sure your essay consist of "team/unity" themes. This is a big school spirit school. Make sure you have at least a 3.7 coming in as a Freshman and a 3.5 as a Transfer. I came from a small school, so I was basically handed my UMD-No.

good grades, good essay, well rounded student activities in high school -- i got a scholarship and at the interview for it they asked a lot of questions about what i'd done in high school. Make sure you have leadership expereince and a few activities that you've committed to doing and have a passion for. Also they asked why i chose the major I did. I think they're looking for not just a smart person, but someone who lives with a passion for their interests
